WHAT IS HBOT
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (also called HBOT, HBO or HBO2) is the intermittent use of 100% oxygen under increased pressure to treat a wide range of medical conditions. It is the saturation of body fluids with oxygen during HBOT that delivers the majority of oxygen. HBOT works through principles of standard gas physics. Gasses at pressure are dissolved in the tissues which can not be achieved under normal circumstances.
WHAT CONDITIONS BENEFIT FROM HBOT?
A diabetic person with a wound that is slow to heal, or simply not healing.
Anyone with a wound that has no improvement in 4 weeks of conventional treatment.
Certain infections of the bone and skin.
Someone with damaged tissue from radiation therapy.
Someone with a skin graft that has questionable blood supply.
Brown Recluse spider bite.
HOW LONG DO HBOT TREATMENTS LAST?
An average treatment lasts approximately 2 hours. This includes the time to compress and decompress the chamber, coupled with the 60-90 minutes at the prescribed treatment depth.
HISTORY
HBOT was first used in the 1890's to control infection. The basis for modern HBOT was developed in the 1930's. There are now more than 23,000 articles on HBOT in the medical literature. The use of HBOT has been expanding at a rapid pace during the past decade due to scientific research in the area. Recognition of the benefit of HBOT for difficult cases has moved the use of HBOT from treatment of last resort to an important part of primary treatments.
